2020 USA•JKA Tryouts

The Funakoshi World Cup is the JKA World Karate Championships held every three years. It was to be in Tokyo, Japan in mid October this year. We are hopeful it will be re-scheduled for this time next year, 2021.

The world tournament is for all JKA members through the world – Youth, Adults, Seniors, Men & Women. The competiton is individual and team for Kata and Kumite. It also includes seminars and business meetings.

Each country is to have tryouts and select the top competitors for each division. Something like the Olympics, you have to qualify.

USA: The there (3) officially recognized US JKA organizations that get to gather every three years for a selection event. Each organization takes turns hosting the event and it was JKA WF America turn in 2020. The selection event was held at our Dojo – JKA of Arizona February 15 & 16, 2020. After the tournament was completed we had a banquet dinner with results being announced on Saturday night. A team for men and women were selected for individual and team competition and youth for the 2020 Funakoshi World Tournament in Tokyo. This team was the official USA JKA Team for this event – the JKA World Tournament!

We are not sure if we will keep this team or have another tryout, a lot of things can change with everyone. It all depends on condition with COVID-19. We look forward to next year’s competition.
